The Rev. Barbara Bea Wagner died peacefully at the Prince County Hospital, beginning the next phase of her life by entering God’s peace and love on November 17, 2023. Born in Charlottetown on June 6, 1953, she was the daughter of the late Layton and Thelma Smallwood. Barbara was predeceased by her husband, the Rev. Charles Wagner. She is survived by her son, the Rev. Dr. Kyle Wagner (Dr. Julie), and three loving grandchildren, Elijah, Charlie and William Wagner. She is also survived by her loving brothers, Ray (Cathy), Blaine (Anne), Thane (Sue); nieces, Dr. Melissa (Josh), Amanda (Noah), Anastasia; and nephews, Matthew (Brie), Connor and Stephen. Barbara is also survived by in-laws, Michael, Mary, and Janet Boutilier, and Emmaline and Daniele Gaiotti. During her life, Barbara possessed a strong heart and a rich love for the wellbeing of others. She was a proud islander and alumnus of UPEI and the Atlantic School of Theology. Ordained in 1979, she served in ministry with the United Church of Canada for over 40 years. Barbara brought her supportive and loving presence to multiple congregations, including Lockeportand New Waterford (Nova Scotia), St. Albert United (Alberta), Bedeque Pastoral Charge, and Central Queens United (PEI). A hallmark of Barbara’s ministry was her passion for social justice and supporting those in need. A listening ear, Barb was an encouragement and inspiration to those she met. Growing up in Parkdale, Barbara loved time spent with close friends and cousins, enjoying summer times in Greenwich, Lakeside and at the family cottage in Fernwood. Barbara always loved a good laugh, listening to music, tapping her toes and enjoying a plate of sweets. Barb was an active participant in her community, travelling to hockey rinks all over the island, visiting people in their homes, and attending church functions and public events. As an avid reader, quilter, knitter, and painter, she also made time for play and creative endeavors. Barbara also loved a good shopping trip and was tremendously generous with her acquisitions. Spending time with family was of utmost importance to Barb. Over the years, Barbara formed many wonderful relationships, but none so dear as with her beloved husband Charlie and son Kyle. The family is comforted in knowing that Barbara touched the lives of so many. As a family, we have lost a dear mother, sister, aunt, mother-in-law, grandmother, friend, and an embodiment of love. She believed in the adage that "if you want a friend, you need to be a friend" and hoped to leave this world a better place for all. The family would like to thank the staff and nurses of Prince County Hospital for their kind and caring nature, including The Rev. Paul Wilkie, Hospital Chaplain. Arrangements have been entrusted to Davison Funeral Home. Visitation will take place Tuesday, November 21st, from 2-6 p.m. in Davison Funeral Home in Kensington. A public Celebration of Barbara’s Life will occur on Wednesday, November 22nd at 11 a.m. in Central Queens United Church, Hunter River, officiated by The Rev. Greg Davis and The Most Rev. Fred Hiltz, Archbishop. Internment and reception to follow the service.
