It is with heavy hearts and appreciation for a life well lived the family of John “Jack” Josiah Howatt, husband of Eleanor Ruby (Weeks) Howatt, announces his peaceful passing on Wednesday, November 1, 2023, at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital. Born in Darlington, PE on February 17, 1932, he was the son of the late Eliphalet and Annie Lois (MacGougan) Howatt. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his siblings and spouses - Walter, George (Jean Stewart), Lloyd (Betty Evans), Jennie (James Williams), Eileen (Lloyd MacLeod) and Edith (William Long), and, brothers-in-law Earl and Fred Weeks. In addition to his loving wife of 68 years, Eleanor, he is survived by his children Doreen MacPherson (Blaine), Brenda Tremere (Gary), Carol Ann McLaine (William), Kathy Corbett, Douglas Howatt, and Heather Delage (Jean-Pierre); 14 grandchildren; 16 great grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. He is also survived by his brother-in-law Robert Weeks (Carol) and sister-in-law Marjorie Buchanan. The last surviving member of his immediate family, Jack was a farmer and businessman from a very young age on the family farm in Darlington. He was known for his work ethic, integrity, and tireless support of his large family, many friends, neighbors, and his community. He served as a Director at Island Tel, Chairman of the PEI Potato Board, PEI Potato Processing Council, Crapaud Curling Club, 1991 Canada Games Volunteer Committee, and was a member of the PEI Farm Advisory Board, Charlottetown Curling Club, Charlottetown Royalty Rotary, and the Havilland Club. An avid curler, he and Eleanor enjoyed many trips to the Brier, and he was extremely proud to be a 35-year annual participant at the Quebec International Curling Bonspiel in Quebec City every January. In later years, Jack enjoyed golfing with the ‘Gypsy Golfers’, being involved with PEI Harness Racing as an owner and attendee of PEI Harness Racing events, attending Friday Morning Breakfast Club, and playing cards or crib with friends. Until very recently, he enjoyed nothing more than a good sociable, where he generally had the floor with his storytelling, wit, and brutal honesty. He lived a long, full, life, never to be forgotten to those who knew him. He will be remembered as a man of his word, and a Steward of the land. Resting at Belvedere Funeral Home, with visitation on Sunday, November 5 from 2-5PM. His funeral service will be held at Belvedere Funeral Home Chapel on Monday, November 6 at 10:00 a.m. with a reception to immediately follow at Belvedere home as well. Interment will be conducted thereafter, at Floral Hills Cemetery. Donations in memory of Jack, if desired, may be made to the Geddy Memorial Cemetery Fund or to the CNIB Guide Dogs Program.
