Of Naufrage Harbour, and Houston, TX, and formerly of Manchester, CT, passed away suddenly on Sunday, November 26, 2023, at his home in Naufrage. He was 66 years old. Sam was born on March 15, 1957, to Jack and Maryann Turkington in Manchester, CT. The family began spending their summers at St. Margaret’s, PEI when Sam was nine. After he graduated from Manchester High School in 1975, he attended Maine Maritime Academy in Castine, ME. Sam spent much of his career at sea, working everything from small ferries and tugs to serving as first mate on oil tankers for Mobil Oil. He served as captain on his very last tanker voyage. He ended his career in Safety Training and Vessel Vetting for Exxon Mobil. In 2004, Sam married his beloved wife, Holly (Hedges). He introduced her to Prince Edward Island, his favorite place on earth, where they vacationed every summer. Upon his retirement in 2017, Sam lived half the year at his home in Naufrage with his rescue cats, Harry, and Hazel, and spent many hours out on the water on his Boston Whaler or tuna fishing on friends’ boats. Sam will be lovingly remembered by his sisters, Ann Turkington and Rosemary Freeman, and his nieces and nephews, Jane, Mary, Ellen, Doug, Gordie, Annie and Marcie and their spouses and children, and his many treasured Island friends. He is also survived by his in-laws, Bob Freeman, Cecelia Hedges and Melissa and Doug Rankin. Sam was predeceased by his parents, Samuel John “Jack” and Maryann Turkington, Jr., father-in-law Howard Hedges and brother-in-law, Hugh Hedges. Sam is resting at Dingwell Funeral Home in Souris. where no funeral services will be held. Completed funeral arrangements will take place at Ladd-Turkington & Carmon Funeral Home, Vernon, CT, from where Sam will go to rest with his parents in Buckland Cemetery, Manchester, CT. There will be a celebration of life for Sam on Prince Edward Island in the summer of 2024.
