It is with heavy hearts that we announce the peaceful passing of Laura Jean Ann Curtis (nee Reeves), aged 78 years, at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital on Monday, December 11, 2023. Laura was raised in Lower Freetown, PEI, the only daughter of the late Jean Lillian (Tucker) and Henry William Reeves. She was a beloved wife and best friend to Orville Curtis for 59 years and beloved mother to Shirlee (Robert) Curtis, Sheila Curtis, and Sharon (Colleen) Curtis, a sister-in-law to Wesley (Ruth) Curtis, and a mother by choice to Tanya Young. She is predeceased by parents-in-law, Alice Jeanette (Stewart) and J. Stanley Curtis; as well her nephew, Myron Wesley Curtis. She will be missed by her many cousins and numerous friends.
Upon marrying Orville, Laura became very involved in the Milton community. She was a dedicated member of the Milton Women’s Institute and completely embraced the WI mission to serve the community and the families therein. She was always deeply involved the WI fund raisers, crafts, social causes and social gatherings. Whether it was quilting bees, church suppers, community concerts, and community socials or picnics, Laura was there and ready to work. She was a lay reader at the St. John’s Anglican church in Milton, sang in the church choir, and was a member of the Mother’s Union. She volunteered with Brownies and Girl Guides for many years. Laura loved to sew and bake. Feeding friends and family made her especially happy. She was always ready to open her home to celebrate special occasions such as baby showers, wedding showers, birthdays, and anniversaries for family and friends. She was always looking for an opportunity to host house parties with music played by friends and family. She would often say with joy and pride that she had a swinging front door with so many people coming and going on a regular basis. She loved being a wife and mother and chose that as her primary and most important role. Through the years she also sold Tupperware, worked briefly as an LNA, and did the book work for Orville’s business. Laura was passionate about tradition, ancestry, and community history. She has many shelves filled with family history and scrapbooks of paper clippings of important events.
The family extends its appreciation to the Queens County Home Care Support Team for their care and compassion during the last few years. We acknowledge the tremendous care provided by the staff at the QEH over the years and especially during her last stay. Immense gratitude is felt for the Island EMS teams for the many times they responded swiftly in times of crisis.
