Ralph Terrence “Terry” TEMPLE — Charlottetown

Ralph Terrence “Terry” TEMPLE — Charlottetown

December 27, 1954 - March 5, 2024.

After a long and courageous battle with cancer, as well as other health concerns, Terry left this world peacefully, on his own terms and the way he wanted, surrounded by family.

Terry grew up in Bishop Falls NFLD and was the oldest son, in a family of six boys and four girls. His parents were Ralph “Skipper” Temple and Marie Elizabeth (Walsh) Temple. Terry worked while in school to help support the family. He was known around town as “Squid” and was always willing to help anyone in need whether it was financial, hard work, or a “gentle” testament of what you are doing wrong and why. Terry had a way with words. You listened.

After completing high school, Terry attended Memorial University for a few years. He realized he was more of a hands-on guy than a book worm. He then attended and graduated from Burin Trade School with a Marine Diesel Engine Repair Certificate. He left NFLD to join his buddies in Toronto, Ontario and was hired by S.I.U where he worked as an Engine Room Mechanical Assistant for various Great Lake Shipping companies. After completing the hour requirements, he wrote his Fourth-Class Motor and Steam ticket. He then joined the C.M.O.U in Thorold, Ontario. After enough hourly requirements, he then wrote his Second-Class Ticket.

It was in Ontario where Terry met, married and created a beautiful love story with his soul mate, his wife Marlene. Together, they raised three amazing children, Ben, Sharon and Tom. There was an unspoken understanding that Buttons and Lacey were the favorites. Though Terry dedicated his life to the seas, he also dedicated his life to his family. He instilled the need to work hard, the desire to help others and the promise that tomorrow will be a better day.

Among Terry’s life accomplishments and awards, he was proudest to be named Poppy Temple. He had a special relationship with all his grandchildren and great-grandchildren and they were on a pedestal that no one could compare to. He was proud of each and every one of you.

After over 40 years of working at sea, Terry decided to retire to spend more time with his family. He had spent most of his sailing career with Algoma Central Marine, however, he did spend about ten years with Secunda Marine.

Terry leaves behind his wife, Marlene (MacDougall); his son; Ben (Lisa), daughter, Sharon (Rob) and son, Tom (Carly); grandchildren, Mitchell, Alexis, Nicole, Jaqueline, Brandon, Cody, Danielle, Faith, Madison, Olivia and Jackson; as well as his great-grandchildren, Kayson, Koen, Warren, Kayia, Isaiah and Avery. Terry also leaves behind his brothers, Gary Temple (Joanne), Wade Temple (Andrea), Sean Temple (Sharon), Glen Temple and sisters, Beverly Hunter, Roxanne Temple, Cindy Winker (Tim); as well as numerous nieces, nephews, great nieces and nephews and all those who knew him as Poppy Temple.

Terry was predeceased by his parents, Ralph “Skipper” and Marie Elizabeth (Walsh) Temple; sister, Karen Temple and brother, Paul Temple.

Resting at Hennessey Cutcliffe Charlottetown Funeral Home from where a visitation will be held on Thursday, March 7th from 4-7 p.m. Funeral service will be held on Friday, March 8th in the Funeral Home Chapel at 11 a.m. Interment later in St. Andrew’s Cemetery, Mount Stewart.
