Smith, Elmer Louis Of Norton, MA, passed away peacefully, surrounded by loving family, on June 14, 2024, at Accent Care Hospice in Milton, MA. Elmer was 89 years old. Elmer was born July 29, 1934, in Cavendish, PE. The first born of Cyril and Marjorie Clark Smith, Elmer began a lifelong devotion to Standardbreds and harness racing as a child. Throughout his youth, Elmer worked the farms, stables, and racing tracks of PEI gaining invaluable knowledge and experience that set the stage for a legendary career as an owner, trainer, and driver of Standardbreds. Elmer's wisdom combined with his easy-going nature enabled him to live a rich and rewarding life raising a family, mentoring colleagues, and pursuing his passion across the Maritime Provinces of Canada and the Northeast United States. Elmer will be remembered for his ever-present pipe, his quick wit, and countless racing wins including the prestigious Gold Cup and Saucer with War Cry Ranger in 1961. Elmer is survived by his devoted wife of 72 years, Joan; daughter, Fay Smith, daughter, Tracey Whalen and her husband Mark; granddaughters, Mackenzie and Caeley Whalen; sister, Marjorie Sagan; brother, Neville Smith and his wife Helen; brother and fellow Standardbred racing legend, Clark "Clarkie" Smith; and many nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his twin sister, Eleanor Meredith; and brothers, Wendell, Grant, and David Smith. A public memorial service will be held at Central Queens Funeral Home on September 10, 2024 at 11 a.m. in New Glasgow, PE.
