John Duncan HUGHES — Toronto, ONTARIO

Hughes, John Duncan Duncan died on Dec. 24, 2023, at St. George's Continuing Care Facility in Toronto. Born in Morell, P.E.I. in 1936, he was the eldest son of John E. and Janie Hughes, both of whom, along with his brother John, pre-deceased him. He is survived by his wife, Elizabeth; son, Scott; brothers, Edward, Patrick (Rosanne), Robert (Lucretia – deceased); sisters, Rosemary Doucette (Ken), Helen (Joe) and sister-in-law, Margaret. Duncan is also survived by brother-in-law, Philip Mullally (Catherine) and sister-in-law, Jeanne Vos (Dwight). He was also pre-deceased by in-laws, Gerard and Rae Mullally and brothers-in-law, Peter (Genevieve), Norman (Jayne) and Bernard (Darlene - deceased). He is remembered fondly by many nephews and nieces. Duncan spent most of his working life with the Canadian National Railway. He began as a telegraph clerk as a teenager in P.E.I. Many years later, he had advanced to the role of Yard Master in Toronto. Following his retirement, he continued to work as a consultant for the CNR at many different locations. In all, he worked some 45-50 years for the railway. Duncan was a kind, generous man. His wonderful sense of humour drew others to him. Everyone who met him loved him. Although he worked "away" most of his life, his heart never left the Island. A memorial service will be held at St. Teresa of the Little Flower Church, Morell, on Monday, July 22 at 2 p.m. Reception to follow.
