Platts, David E. It is with profound sadness that we announce the death of The Honourable David Everett Platts. David died at the age of 60, four years after being diagnosed with cancer. David died in Montreal on July 24, 2024. David is survived by his husband, Marco Robidoux; his siblings, Susan Platts, Douglas (Donna) Platts; his in-laws, Leo and Celine Robidoux, Christopher Robidoux (Carol Bradly) and Stéphan Robidoux (Pasquale Poitras); his godchildren, Mathew, Madeleine, Simon, Alexis, Léa, Guillaume and Frédérique; cousins and extended family. David is predeceased by his parents, Bill (H.W.) Platts (June 29, 2002) and Marion C. Platts (nee Furness) (September 2, 2023). David's passing has created an indescribable void for his husband, Marco; sister, Sue; close family members and the many friends both near and far. David was born on June 27, 1964, in Calgary, Alberta. He graduated from Dr. E.P. Scarlett High School in 1982. He attended the University of Calgary obtaining a Bachelor's degree (Honours) in political science and French. His studies included a year spent at Laval University in 1984. David earned a Bachelor's degree in civil law and common law at McGill University. David attended McGill on the Wainwright scholarship, awarded to him for his outstanding academic record. He graduated in 1988, articled with Martineau Walker and in 1989, accepted a clerkship for Justice Peter deCarteret Cory at the Supreme Court of Canada. After returning to private practice, David ultimately became a partner at McCarthy Tétrault, specializing in professional liability and disciplinary law for CMPA. David appeared before the Quebec Superior Court and Court of Appeal, the Federal Court, Trial Division and Appeal, the Newfoundland Supreme Court and Court of Appeal, and the Supreme Court of Canada. He had been a regular guest lecturer at McGill and past President of the Guy Guérin Cup and Sopinka Cup Mooting Competitions. In August 2018 David was appointed to the Quebec Superior Court. During his appointment Chief Justice Fournier noted the attendance of the Supreme Court of Canada's Chief Justice Richard Wagner. Never in the history of the Quebec Superior Court had a sitting Chief Justice attended during an appointment. David was extremely honoured to have Justice Wagner in attendance. David's successful career in the legal field wasn't his only passion; he loved people, reading, travelling, gastronomy, the French language. He loved his family and his friends that he considered to be family. He was a great mentor to many. He was passionate about the work that GRIS-Montreal does in relation to diversity and inclusion. He served as the President for five years as well as a volunteer for many more and was the Chief Inclusion Officer at McCarthy Tetrault until his judicial appointment. David's family would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to the doctors, surgeons, radiologists, nurses, oncology team etc. who fought so hard to give David all the extra time that we were so very fortunate to have. We are forever grateful. David will be interred at a later date both in Montreal and at the cemetery where his parents are buried in Vernon Bridge, PE. In lieu of flowers the family requests donations be made to the Cedars Cancer Centre at the McGill University Health Centre or to GRIS-Montreal.
