Doncaster, Douglas Hayden It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Douglas Hayden Doncaster (Major ret.) age 86 of Kensington, PE on Friday, August 9, 2024. Born in Amherst, he was the son of the late Alexander and Ola (Benjamin) Doncaster. Doug graduated from Amherst Regional High School, and served 36 years in the RCAF, rising to the rank of Major. A navigator by trade, while in the RCAF, he accomplished much. He was the Commandant of the Observer Training and Electronic Warfare school - 880 squadron, was part of the first crew to track a submarine under the ice at the north pole, and was part of the crew setting the then record for longest airborne flight of the Argus (30 hrs). He was seconded to National Automatically Establishment (NAE) for seven yrs as SME for Magnetic Airborne Detection (MADD) equipment. He was part of MP&EU (Maritime Proving and Evaluation Unit) as navigator and MADD SME. He was part of Squadrons 404 and 415, and flew to over 20 different countries in the Argus, Neptune, and Aurora. After retiring from the RCAF, Doug became active in the community. He served on the Kensington Town Council and was elected Mayor of the Town of Kensington. He was the President of the PEI Federation of Municipalities and served on the board of the Canadian Federation of Municipalities. He was also President of the Kensington Legion and served with the PEI Legion Command. He spent time with PEI EMO and the PEI Business Development Corporation. He was a member of the Order of St. Lazarus, and held the positions of Worshipful Master of Prince Edward Lodge No. 14 and Warden of St. Mark's Anglican parish. Doug was a recipient of the Canada 125 medal, as well as the NATO service medal, and RCAF long service medal with two clasps. When not busy serving the community, he loved to spend time at the cottage in Jackson's Point. He loved to go for Sunday drives, always taking the longest route possible in order to explore new places and meet new people. He loved reading, puzzles, and watching the Blue Jays. Doug will be forever remembered by daughter, Sandra (Todd MacEwen); and grandson, Cooper. Doug is also survived by his siblings, Shirley Wheaton of Moncton, Dean (Marilyn) Doncaster of Carrolls Corner, Judith (Bob) Carter of Jackson's Point, Donna Conrad (Neil Moore) of Truro; as well as several nieces, nephews and extended family. Doug was predeceased by his beloved wife, Gail, who remained in his thoughts every day. He was also predeceased by his parents; siblings, George Doncaster, Earl Doncaster, June Doncaster, David Doncaster; and brother-in-law, Russell Wheaton. Arrangements are under the care of Davison Funeral Home, Kensington PE. As per Doug's wishes, there will be no visitation. Brethren of Prince Edward Lodge No. 14 Grahams Road will hold a Masonic service at the funeral home Wednesday at 4 p.m. A graveside service will be held Thursday August 15th at 11 a.m. at Hillside Cemetery, Springhill. Memorial contributions can be made in Doug's memory to the St. Mark's Anglican Church or a charity of your choice.
