Laura "Maxine" HURLEY — Charlottetown

Laura "Maxine" HURLEY — Charlottetown

Hurley, Laura "Maxine" Age 87, passed peacefully at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital (QEH) in Charlottetown, PEI, on Monday Oct. 21, 2024. Maxine is survived by her husband, George Joseph 'Joe' Hurley; daughters, Kimberley and Janet Hurley (Patrick Bergin); and son, Bill Hurley (Annie Letourneau). Cherished grandchildren, Joseph Harris, Kathleen, Ailish and Siobhan Bergin , and Maxime and Ariane Hurley. She was predeceased by a daughter, Karen Marie Hurley; and parents, Sadie and Frederick Huestis. Maxine grew up in a large farming family in Bear Island, NB. She was the last living sibling of Roland, Harry, Herman (Spud) Kenneth, Merle, Russell, Lorne, Neil, Ruthie, Eileen and Bernice Huestis. Joe and Maxine settled to raise their family in Bedford, amongst many lifelong friends on Monarch and Basinview Drives. True to her NB roots, Maxine was always selfless and extremely dedicated to family always taking care of their home and four children. Any free time was spent picking berries for jams, or fiddleheads along river beds when they were in season. She jarred pickles every summer and ground meat for mincemeat pies at Christmas. Although she would never consider herself artistic, mom loved music, knit her share of mittens, taught herself to crochet intricate doilies and discovered a passion later in life for making beautiful hooked rugs with the Colchester Heritage Rug Hookers. Mom's final years were lived with Alzheimer's. She showed incredible courage and continued to live with a surprising amount of joy; she lived in the moment and was very much a kid at heart and always warmed people with her kind smile. She took great pleasure in a hot cup of tea with a sugar donut, flowers of all varieties, but particularly 'showy' little yellow ones and drives across PEI marvelling at the beautiful fields. The family would like to thank her family doctor (Dr. Keith Baglole), all of the nurses and staff at QEH Medical Unit 3 for their compassionate care, and kind staff of Queens Home Care for their home visits. She especially enjoyed spending time with her husband of 66 years, Joe. She always felt safest when she knew where he was. "Where's Joe?" A funeral mass and reception will be held at Our Lady of the Assumption Church, 145 Stratford Rd, Stratford, PEI, on Friday, October 25th, at 11 a.m. Online messages of condolences may be sent to www.belvederefh.com and any inquiries may be directed to: [email protected]
