Fraser, Janette At Health Sciences North, Sudbury, Ontario, on October 31, 2024, Janette Marie Fraser (née McCarthy), age 82 years. Janette was born August 10, 1942, to Margaret Mary McCarthy (née Broderick) and Joseph "Emmit" McCarthy in the downstairs bedroom at the McCarthy Family Home, Sea Cow Pond, Tignish, R.R. 4, Prince Edward Island. The family first moved to Sea Cow Pond in 1851 and the home was originally known as Grove Cottage. The second of seven children, Janette was delivered by Midwife Mary Ellen Morrissey, RN. Janette was the last child to be born inside the family home. While growing up on the family farm, Janette attended the local one-room schoolhouse before matriculating to high school at the Congregation of Notre Dame Convent in Tignish. In grade 10, she was awarded the Governor General's Bronze Medal for the pupil ranking highest in the provincial examinations. After graduating high-school in 1959, Janette took commercial courses at the Notre Dame Convent and Academy in Charlottetown until she completed the secretarial program in 1960. In 1960, Janette moved to Quebec where she first stayed with her Aunt Rita Gavin in L'Abord-à-Plouffe, QC, before she relocated to Montreal. During her time in Montreal, she worked at the Australian Government Trade Commission, the Iron Ore Company of Canada, and the insurance agency J.H. Minet & Company. While living in Montreal, she met her future husband Alfred "Al" Fraser, from Antigonish, at a dance for Maritimers in the area. They were married in Montreal on July 10, 1965. Just prior to their wedding, Al Fraser began working at INCO in Sudbury, ON, and after their honeymoon, they settled in Sudbury and eventually had three children. Once in Sudbury, Janette worked as a secretary for Gordon C. Jones Real Estate and Insurance until 1976 when Mr. Jones retired and she decided to become a housewife. It was during this time she started to research her family history and became an avid genealogist, researching in archives, libraries, and museums across the country. She also helped many people with their genealogical research. By the early 1990s, Janette was employed at the Taxation Centre in Sudbury where she worked for several years. In 1995, she went back to school and received an Environmental Horticulture – Phase II Certificate from Cambrian College. It was also around that time she retired and continued her passions for genealogical research, reading and gardening. She also volunteered for many years with the Canadian Cancer Society.
